Mainland Naxos

Naxos Island the largest and most fertile island in Cyclades and one of the most attractive and beautiful in Greece. It combines golden sands with the mountain beauty.

There are many villages in the island, each with its own history and style. Villages that harmonically combine the majestic mountain beauty with the intensively cultivated agricultural plains and kilometers of sweeping golden sands.

Apeiranthos is a pretty village on the slops of Mount Zas at 650 metres altitude and was supposed to have originally been settled by Cretans. The village has its own distinct style, the houses are built from marble.

Keramoti (second picture on the right) is a very attractive village surrounded by mountains. It is full of walnut trees, vineyards, and olive trees. The village can be accessed by a road leading down to it, from the junction Stavros Keramotis. Stavros Keramotis is one of the very few points on the island where you can see both east and west sea sides of Naxos. Close to the village are ruins of an old tower.

Koronos is one of the most beautiful villages in Naxos Island. It is a stepped village, scrabbling up two opposite mountain sides and renowned for its emery mines. As there is no road passing through the village, exploring can be done only on foot.

Apollon (third picture on the right) is the the northern village of the island. A lovely fishing boat port is situated on a bay sheltered by high mountains. The hills around were marble quarries in antiquity. In the village is the huge Kouros statue (10.50 metres long) which supposed to represent either God Apollon or Dionysos.

Filoti is nice village, settled well up on the flank of Zas mountain. There are quite a few cafes and taverns, many of them been shaded by a massive plane tree.

Potamia is a group of 3 pretty villages, Pano Potamia, Kato Potamia and Mesi Potamia. It is narrow lush green valley that offers relaxation in a beautiful surrounding.

Sagri (11 Km from Naxos Town) with its ancient monuments, Byzantine Churches, Venetian castles is one of the interesting places in Naxos. The plethora of old Byzantine churches and Monasteries in the area are reminiscent of the famous Byzantine area of Mystra. The village itself with the beautiful island houses, quaint cobblestone alleys's old churches and monasteries, amazing windmills and above all its hospitable inhabitants, gathers the interests of both local sand visitors to the area.
